What to do when it’s dark at 5pm: 8 small evening rituals

The clocks go back, and suddenly the day ends in the dark. Work finishes, the window is black, and the evening feels like it’s already over.

It isn’t. It’s the same evening you had in September. It just needs a little more light, and a clear moment where the day stops and your time begins.

Here are eight small rituals for that moment. You don’t need all eight. Pick two.

The eight rituals

  1. Lamp on at sunset. Light the room before it gets dark, so the dark never arrives all at once.
  2. Laptop closed by 5:30. The day ends when you say so.
  3. A walk in the evening. Ten minutes counts.
  4. Something warm on the stove. Soup, tea, anything that steams.
  5. Phone in another room. One hour. It will keep.
  6. Tomorrow’s Top 3. Three things, written down, then you’re done.
  7. Ten pages. A book, not a feed.
  8. Candle and nothing. Do nothing on purpose.

Pick two, not eight

A routine with eight steps is another to-do list. Choose one ritual that ends your workday (the lamp, the laptop, the Top 3) and one that starts your evening (the walk, the soup, the candle). That’s the whole plan.

Put the evening on your calendar first

An empty evening looks free to everyone, including you. Put it on the calendar: “Personal time”, from 6. Then when a late meeting lands there, you notice, and you can choose.

That’s how protected time works in Anser. When something lands in your evening, Anser tells you. You decide: allow it once, or decline kindly. The 9–5 with Boundaries template sets it up for you, with a shutdown at 5:15 and personal time from 6.

Free: ritual cards and sunset lock screens

Print the eight ritual cards, cut them out, and pick two each evening. Or put a sunset on your lock screen as a small reminder that the evening is yours.
